Middle Age and Nudity - Stepping
naked into our future
"Middle-age nudity, out in the open
By Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY
In a revealing movie season in which the position of costume
designer seems on the verge of extinction, two films — the
glossy star vehicle Something's Gotta Give and the
low-budget Brit comedy Calendar Girls — celebrate the
undraped form of the middle-aged woman.
One problem: Why does their disrobing merit
only a family-safe PG-13? Does the Motion Picture Association of
America consider aging skin less titillating than the firm,
youthful kind?
Actually, it was the movie's makers who
wanted to avoid an R and increase their potential audience. In Something's
Gotta Give, Diane Keaton's full-frontal flashing of Jack
Nicholson's late-life lothario lasts for two seconds. That's one
second less than was originally shot; the scene was snipped after
the ratings board griped that the nudity lasted too long."
